07 April 2006 HSBC sponsored solo exhibition of Shambu Acharya gets underway
The solo exhibition of Shambhu Acharya titled "Patachitra" was inaugurated at GallariKaya on 07 April 2006. As part of "Bangla New Year 1413" celebration The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) Limited in Bangladesh sponsored the exhibition. The High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, Mrs. Veena Sikri inaugurated the exhibition, while Dr. Hamida Hossain, Member, Bangladesh Jatiyo Karushilpa Parishad also graced the inaugural session.
Patachitra is one of the oldest forms of popular art in Bangladesh. Dating from 12 century, and existing even today, pats or scroll paintings narrate stories based on religious or moral themes for the entertainment of village folks. Shambhu Acharya, being the 10th generation artist of the illustrious Acharya family of Munshiganj engaged in keeping this near-extinct form of old traditional art alive. A Total 35 Pata paintings including Gazi's Pata by the artist will be on display.
Mustafizur R Khan, Manager, Marketing and Public Relations of HSBC in Bangladesh and Gautam Chakraborty, Director of GallariKaya were also present on the occasion.
The exhibition will remain open from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm till 16 April 2006 at the GallariKaya, located at house 20, Road 16, Sector, Uttara, Dhaka.
