The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) Ltd in Bangladesh launched a nationwide environmental competition through an interactive session with the students of classes 8-10 at Chittagong Dastagir High School recently.
Under this program, staff of HSBC will be visiting different schools in Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet and providing a briefing session to the students on a variety of environmental issues. The issues to be discussed during the program include conservation of water, waste management, electricity consumption, Carbon Dioxide emission reduction, forestation and climate change.
Students are being invited to submit a 1-2 page paper to HSBC outlining their views on how they can personally help preserve the environment. The 3 winners will be selected and each will receive a cash prize.
Speaking at the launching in the school, HSBC Bangladesh Chief Executive Officer, Mr Steve Banner explained HSBC's global commitment to help conserve the environment and raise awareness about environmental issues. He expressed his hope that this programme would encourage the upcoming generation to actively think about how they can make a positive impact on the environment.

HSBC Group has committed US$100 million to combat the risks posed by climate change through a partnership between HSBC and The Climate Group, Earthwatch Institute, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and WWF. In addition HSBC has also committed US$90million for internal environmental efforts.
