HSBC Climate Awards 2011

In 2011, HSBC and The Daily Star partnered for the second time to initiate the HSBC – The Daily Star Climate Awards 2011 with Waste Concern as the Knowledge Partner. The awards categories were revised, aiming to recognise the winners as the 'Climate Champions' of the country.


The winners

Category 1: Climate Champion in Green Business

Winner: Energypac Electronics Limited for promoting energy-efficient CFL bulb in the country
Details: Replacing incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs is one big leap towards environment-friendly civilization. Having that in mind, Energypac Electronics Ltd pioneered the CFL industry in Bangladesh. This particular business area, among many other business wings of Energypac, was initiated in 2004 and through this Energypac Electronics Limited assisted the mass people to save 440 million metric ton Co2.


Category 2A: Climate Champion in Green Operations - 100% Bangladeshi owned enterprises

Winner: The Bengal Glass Works Limited for adopting the practice of recycling glass bottles and other eco-friendly manufacturing process
Details: Being in a high energy consuming industry like glass making – The Bengal Glass Works Limited started collecting glass bottles from municipal waste and recycling it to minimise the energy requirement. Furthermore, the company also installed regenerator furnaces, wastewater recycling plant and exhaust gas monitoring system in its facility. Altogether, their initiative contributed towards the environment by:

  • Ensuring 10,286 metric tons of C02 reduction in a 12 month period.
  • Reducing 26,707 metric tons of glass waste from landfills


Category 2B: Climate Champion in Green Operations - full or partial foreign owned enterprises

Winner: Grameenphone Limited for 'Building a Greener Network' initiative
Details: To reduce energy consumption of the base networking towers, Grameenphone limited has started running its 39 stations with solar energy. In the long run, Grameenphone limited aims to operate its 160 sites with renewable energy.


Category 3: Climate Champion in Knowledge Management

Winner: Radio Today for 'Green Hour' project
Details: Radio Today - a local broadcasting media - daily airs an hour-long programme called 'Green Hour' where they highlight topics related to climate change and pollution. Also covering latest news on different environmental issues, Radio Today reaches out to build awareness among its 10 million listeners.


Category 4: Climate Champion in Community Engagement

Winner: Rural Development Academy, Bogra for 'Woman in Seed Entrepreneurship (WISE)' project
Details: RDA, a government run research organization in the northern region of Bangladesh, initiated an extensive training programme titled 'Woman in Seed Entrepreneurship' on sustainable method of producing and preserving quality seeds. Assisted by DFID (Department for International Development) and NORAD (Norwegian Development Co-operation), 'WISE' is implemented in 30 villages assisting 3400 rural families.
