In the first edition of the HSBC – The Daily Star Climate Awards 2010, HSBC, in collaboration with The Daily Star, awarded four champions of green vision to tackle the impacts of climate change. Waste Concern was the Knowledge Partner for this initiative taken by HSBC and The Daily Star.
Category 1: Climate Change Adaptation
Winner: The Satkhira District Administration
Details:
The Satkhira District Administration had led the efforts to excavate the Morrichap River, which had been dead for the last 15 years and was responsible for massive water-logging in three administrative segments of the district.
Category 2: Climate Change Mitigation
Winner: Industrial and Infrastructure Development Finance Company (IIDFC)
Details:
Industrial and Infrastructure Development Finance Company (IIDFC) Ltd financed the country's first green brick project, thereby, helping to introduce a technology that uses 50 percent less energy in making bricks.
Category 3: Climate Change Research and Knowledge Management
Winner: Aneire Ehmar Khan
Details:
Aneire Ehmar Khan, a researcher from Imperial College of the UK, won for her research on the correlation of salinity in coastal areas with maternal health condition.
Category 4: Green Business Entrepreneurship
Winner: Viyellatex Group
Details:
Viyellatex Group, a leading apparel company of the country, won the award for adopting green and energy-saving technology in manufacturing garments.
